Happy Republic Day, Turkey!

The present Doodle honors Turkey’s Republic Day, one of the country’s most significant holidays.

On this day in 1923, the Turkish parliament (called the Grand National Assembly) corrected its constitution to build up the Republic of Turkey.

Depicted in the Doodle artwork is Turkey’s iconic First Grand National Assembly of Turkey Building, which housed the parliament from 1920 and 1924 and filled in as the site of the country’s historic presentation of freedom.

Situated in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara, the structure was developed in a traditional Turkish engineering style including the conspicuous utilization of Ankara stone, or andesite.

Since its impressive beginnings, the landmark has been repurposed on numerous occasions, and today celebrates Turkey’s history as the War of Independence Museum (Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi).
