The present Doodle recognizes Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Following 400 years of occupation, Greece National Day celebrates the hoisting of Greece’s blue and white flag into the sky as a declaration of its independence.

Greece celebrates the occasion with flag-day parades, talks, and visits to memorial services. These celebrations draw large number of observers who later enjoy traditional dishes like bakaliaros (fried hake) joined by a garlic and potato puree, called skordalia.

This significant day in history denotes the hard-won fight and fried Greece’s proceeded with freedom for more than 200 years.
