Although the “Titan” project was abandoned after ten years and billions of dollars were spent, it is now known that the Apple Car never made it to market. Apple has big goals for its electric vehicle, including cutting-edge autonomous driving technology. The business has created a chip that is equal to four M2 Ultras put together in order to make this a reality.

A Chip in an Apple Car would be the Same as Four M2 Ultras

Prior to the project’s closure, the Apple Silicon team was “heavily involved,” according to a Monday Q&A with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The journalist claimed that the corporation was working very hard on the “AI brain” of the vehicle, which would run on a specially designed Apple Silicon chip.

The combined power of four M2 Ultras chips, the most potent semiconductor Apple currently possesses, would be equal to that of this new technology. A single M2 Ultra chip has 134 billion transistors and is equipped with a 32-core Neural Engine, a 24-core CPU, and a GPU with up to 76 cores. The current Mac Studio and Mac Pro generations are powered by M2 Ultra.

It’s interesting to note that Gurman claims the new chip’s development was “nearly finished” prior to the project’s termination. The engineering of this new chip might be used by the business for other projects, as some of the engineers involved in the automobile project were relocated to other teams at Apple.

The Project Apple Car Comes to an End

Tim Cook oversaw Apple’s automobile project, which it has been developing since 2014. The company has experimented with various concepts and prototypes over the past ten years. According to a recent source, the business attempted to discuss the building of the Apple Car with Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Volkswagen, McLaren, and Tesla.

But after discovering how difficult it would be to create a completely driverless vehicle as Apple executives had desired, the company rethought the project using a less ambitious strategy. Apple had to pay about $1 billion a year for the initiative.
