Happy Independence Day, Latvia!

The present Doodle celebrates Latvia’s Independence Day, otherwise called Latvijas Republikas proklamēšanas diena (Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia).

On this day in 1918, the People’s Council of Latvia pronounced the nation’s independence from German and Russian occupation.

Portrayed in the present Doodle is the Latvian public banner, which includes a solitary restricted white stripe against a field of crimson.

The flag was officially received in 1990—a year prior to Latvia again announced its independence after generally 50 years of Soviet standard yet its plan follows back hundreds of years.

As per a fourteenth century composition named Livländische Reimchronik (“Livland Rhyme-Chronicle”), a comparative standard was flown by Latvians as far back as 1279.
