According to sources, Apple and Google are “actively negotiating” for Apple to release Gemini, a generative AI technology, on the iPhone. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also apparently being explored.

The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, has previously stated that the company is devoting “a tremendous amount of time and effort” to developing artificial intelligence features, with plans to make them available to consumers “later this year.” A report implies that the AI capabilities integrated into Apple products may eventually be fueled by a combination of proprietary and third-party models. With the release of iOS 18 later this year, Apple’s models may enable on-device generative AI. Meanwhile, cloud-based AI services, such as text and image production, may be made possible through collaborations with companies like Google.

Should a Google agreement materialize, Apple wouldn’t be the first business to work with the search engine behemoth to integrate AI capabilities into its phones. Earlier this year, Samsung gave its Galaxy S24 smartphones—which use Google’s AI technology—a number of features branded with the Galaxy AI name. Additionally, Google’s AI is widely visible on its Pixel 8 smartphones. It’s still unclear how Google’s AI technology will be branded or integrated into Apple products.

The iPhone manufacturer already has a long-standing agreement for an estimated $18 billion a year with Google to set Google Search as the default on its handsets.
