A senior company official announced that Maruti Suzuki, the top automobile manufacturer in India, will produce its first all-electric vehicle in 2024–2025. The vehicle is a sports utility vehicle (SUV) dubbed “eVX,” and it will be produced at Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.

The company running the Hansalpur auto plant, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Ltd (SMG), is an entirely owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki. It started functioning in February 2017.

“In 2024–2025, SMG’s factory in Hansalpur will produce our first electric vehicle (EV) SUV.” At a press conference in Ahmedabad, Maruti Suzuki executive director for corporate affairs Rahul Bharti stated, “At this time, the facility has three plants. To manufacture the EV, a new plant or new production line will be integrated into the existing setup.”

He said that the 60kWh battery pack that will be used with the eVX will have a range of roughly 560 kilometers when fully charged.

According to Bharti, SMG and the Gujarati government inked a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022 for ₹3,100 crore to be invested in the Hansalpur factory for the production of electric vehicles.

Suzuki’s EV concept car eVX had its international debut in January at the Maruti Suzuki Pavilion at Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi.

According to Bharti, on December 4, SMG exceeded the production of three million cars at the factory.

Operating since February 2017, SMG has reached the 3 million cumulative output milestone in approximately 6 years and 11 months. The last million units were produced in a just 17 months, which is important, he added.

A 750,000 lakh unit yearly manufacturing capability is available at this Maruti Suzuki plant in Gujarat. He also mentioned that vehicles made here are offered in foreign markets in addition to domestic ones.

He said Maruti Suzuki manufactures 50% of the automobiles it exports at its Hansalpur plant.
