The UK’s Ineos offers a new choice for those looking for a tough midsize pickup truck.

Known by Ineos as a station wagon, the Grenadier Quartermaster is essentially an elongated version of their Grenadier SUV with a bed at the rear. According to Ineos, deliveries are expected to begin before the end of the year, and it has opened the order books for pickup this week.

The pickup truck is significantly more costly than the SUV, which went on sale in the United States last year and is priced at $71,500. This is probably because of the so-called “chicken tax,” which imposes a 25% levy on light trucks manufactured in other countries. Both body designs are constructed on the same line at a former Mercedes-Benz facility in France and have body-on-frame architecture.

In the United States, Quartermaster price begins at $86,900. Trialmaster and Fieldmaster grades, which are better equipped, start at $94,900. Destination fees are not included in any of the statistics.

The only available engine in the United States is a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged engine from BMW with a 282 horsepower rating (a diesel option is available in other areas). The engine is coupled to a 4-wheel-drive system with a center differential lock, a 2-speed transfer case, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. LED headlights, Recaro seats, roof rails, and towing eyes up front and back are also standard features.

The wheelbase of the pickup is 127 inches, about 12 inches longer than that of the SUV. The back bed can carry up to 1,675 pounds of cargo and is somewhat longer than 60 inches. The SUV’s maximum towing rating of 7,700 pounds is consistent with this rating.

Additional specs include approach, breakover, and departure angles that Ineos claims are unmatched for production pickups, 10.4 inches of ground clearance, and 31.5 inches of wading depth. Both ends feature solid beam axles by Carraro.

For the Trialmaster and Fieldmaster, the more costly grades are pre-configured to fit professional off-roaders and infrequent off-roaders, respectively. Larger wheels, a higher air intake, a bed liner, a power takeoff, front and rear differential locking, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires are among the extras, depending on the grade.
