Following ChatGPT’s November 2022 launch, Google was compelled to develop its artificial intelligence capabilities. Google launched Google Bard, which is powered by LaMDA, a few months ago in March of this year. The company launched PaLM in May, which enhanced its AI model. Google revealed Gemini, an even more potent base model, this week. Google Bard is now powered by this model, and it performs significantly better. Samsung and other Android phones will also have Gemini AI.

The three versions of Gemini are called Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano. Google says that the Gemini Ultra, which is the most powerful and needs the internet to function, outperforms GPT-4, the chip that runs ChatGPT and other chatbots. Gemini Pro is now the power behind Google Bard.

A more compact version that runs on-device is called Gemini Nano. The Pixel 8 Pro smartphone now has multiple features powered by Gemini Nano. For example, the Voice Recorder app now functions without an internet connection thanks to a summary feature. Thus, voice recordings from talks and interviews can still be summarized when the Pixel 8 Pro isn’t online. Gboard’s Smart Replies function, which can now be tested with WhatsApp, is likewise powered by Gemini Nano. It offers thoughtful responses and is aware of the conversation’s context. There will soon be additional chat apps with this feature.

On certain Pixel smartphones, the Assistant with Bard experience is also powered by Gemini AI. Google also discussed Android 14 and the way that the AI Core service enables developers to leverage AI technologies like Gemini Nano on smartphones that run flagship processors from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung’s System LSI (which creates Exynos CPUs), and Tensor G3 from Google. The company promised to shortly announce support for additional devices as well as alliances with additional silicon partners. The business didn’t say much, but it appears that Gemini AI can work on current flagship smartphone chips, such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Exynos 2400, and Dimensity 9300, which were just unveiled.

There are rumors that the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPUs will power the Galaxy S24 series. It is quite possible that Gemini Nano may provide comparable AI functionality, such as intelligent responses, real-time transliteration, and intelligent responses from AI-powered digital voice assistants, given that it can operate on-device on phones running these chips. Galaxy AI, which will provide real-time translation during phone calls, has already been revealed by Samsung and will be available on the Galaxy S24. It is anticipated that Samsung will reveal additional AI functions at the Galaxy S24 series launch event.
