The leading provider of caller identification, Truecaller, unveiled an innovative app powered by artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday that aims to successfully block spam calls. According to media reports, Truecaller’s new feature-integrated into the ‘Max’ update-automatically bans incoming calls that do not come from permitted contacts or that are flagged as spam calls by its advanced artificial intelligence algorithm.

While there is a warning in the feature about the possibility of missing valid calls, Truecaller has assured customers that their suggestions would be taken into account. But the business hasn’t revealed how it determines which calls are spam. Although calls can be reported as spam by users, it’s unclear if Truecaller uses additional methods to recognize these numbers on its own.

Truecaller’s Android application is the only one with the AI-powered ‘Max’ spam blocking capability; iOS does not allow caller ID apps to track spammer status or automatically block certain numbers. To access this function, users must be a Truecaller Premium plan subscriber. Paid users of the Truecaller app can use the latest features by going to Settings > Block. This setting used to have two tabs, Off and Basic, where users could adjust how they wanted to handle spam calls. Spam callers are detected but not stopped while using the Off setting, whereas calls from numbers that the community reports as spammers are automatically blocked when using the Basic mode. A new tab named Max has just been added.

If you select Max, calls from known spammers will be automatically blocked by the Truecaller app.

Users are advised, however, that this setting can unintentionally prevent calls from legitimate businesses.

According to TechCrunch, Kunal Dua, Vice President of Search at Truecaller, the company used “multiple dozen algorithms” in different markets throughout lengthy testing to identify spam numbers. To implement the feature, these were then incorporated into its AI systems. Additionally, Truecaller emphasized that it will keep incorporating user feedback to improve the service.

Naturally, we make every effort to differentiate between reputable companies and spam. However, there may be circumstances in which certain respectable companies are temporarily [prohibited],” TechCrunch cited Dua as saying.
