Disregarding the congested June 7 weekend, which currently features Lionsgate’s The Crow and Sony’s Bad Boys 4, New Line’s Ishana Night Shyamalan horror film The Watchers is set to open a week later on Father’s Day weekend, June 14, which also happens to be the home of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

It is acceptable for an adult film and a Pixar feature to be released on the same weekend.

After a bidding war, M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter’s feature directorial debut was acquired by New Line. Based on A.M. Shine’s 2021 Gothic Horror novel, the film centers on 28-year-old artist Mina (played by Dakota Fanning), who finds herself marooned in a vast, uninhabited forest in western Ireland. When Mina seeks cover, she unintentionally finds herself stuck with three strangers who are being followed and observed by enigmatic beings every night.

Olwen Fouere (The Northman), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), and Oliver Finnegan (Creeped Out) are also featured in the film. Producing with Ashwin Rajan and Nimitt Mankad is M. Night Shyamalan. Stephen Dembitzer and Jo Homewood serve as executive producers.

In the meantime, June’s first weekend is a scorching frame. Years ago, big studios would avoid the period following Memorial Day. However, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse set a new opening high for the first weekend of June last year with a $120.7M three-day debut.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($93.6M) from 2004 and Wonder Woman ($103.2M) from 2017 are two more significant openings for the first weekend of June.

With a nationwide box office opening of $182.6 million over Father’s Day weekend, Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 remains the highest grossing film in the country.
