Apple has been experimenting with several camera bump designs for the basic iPhone 16 models over the last few months, and each one has included a vertical camera position.

The most recent prototype has the same setup, with two distinct camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras enclosed within a raised surface curved like a pill. This suggests Apple may have taken cues from previous iPhone models, such the iPhone X.

Apple is anticipated to include Spatial Video recording in the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus devices due to the vertical camera arrangement. The diagonal camera configuration of the current iPhone 15 models prevents them from capturing spatial footage; only the iPhone 15 Pro devices with the Vision Pro headset can achieve this.

Recent iPhone 16 prototypes have included an upgraded camera bump design in addition to a smaller Action Button like to the one found on the iPhone 15 Pro and a pressure-sensitive Capture Button for taking horizontal video that fits flush with the device’s frame.

We warned readers that the most recent prototype, which MacRumors originally unveiled earlier this month, was derived from pre-production data and might not accurately represent the final design that is put into mass production.

Similarly, the fact that case maker molds are available at this early stage does not mean that Apple has decided on this design for the iPhone 16. It’s possible that the molds are just test examples based on preliminary schematics. The images could not be accurate representations of the cases because case makers frequently base their early designs for forthcoming iPhones on leaks and rumors.

Majin Bu posted the most recent pictures on X (formerly Twitter). Although Bu’s track record for reliable rumors is varied, schematics and photos that Bu has previously published reveal the same design and are consistent with our own data that we separately obtained from the supplier chain.
