Porsche is recalling just 749 Taycan all-electric cars between 2021 and 2024 because of a potential short circuit in the high-voltage battery.

Data analytics revealed that the Porsche Taycan, Taycan 4S, and Taycan 4 Cross Turismo cars might have a high-voltage battery short-circuiting problem.

In an NHTSA 473 Safety Recall Report, the business stated:

“Short circuits within the battery modules of some Taycan high-voltage batteries can cause thermal events and occasionally fires.”

Documents show that a high-voltage battery short circuit can raise the likelihood of a thermal incident. Production problems in the high-voltage battery modules seem to be the main source of the problem, which raises the possibility of a short circuit.

Based on the records, Porsche purchases its batteries from LG Energy Solutions in Poland in this specific case.

Porsche learned of a Taycan unit battery fire in 2021, which happened soon after charging. According to the company, there would likely be “more battery fire incidents” in 2023.

“although the root cause analysis was still ongoing, on 6 December 2023, Porsche determined that a safety-related defect exists in the identified vehicles (manufacturer recall identification code APB5). Porsche continued investigating this issue together with the battery cell/module manufacturer, using, in particular, data analytics and hardware analyses. With this additional investigation and analyses, on 13 March 2024, Porsche determined that a safety-related defect exists in additional vehicles identified via data analytics and hardware analyses.”

The Taycan manufactured by Porsche after March 4, 2024, is exempt from the recall.

Porsche suggests charging only 80% of any impacted vehicles, though. The business also stated that it will acquire vehicle battery data through over-the-air access or battery examination. Porsche stated that higher-quality cells will be used in the fabrication of replacement battery modules.

Due to battery problems, Porsche had to recall 2,570 Taycan cars in China last year.
