Tesla announces the release of a significant new in-car software upgrade that will include an enhanced UI, a “Auto Shift Beta,” native Audible, an updated Spotify app, and other features.

It isn’t currently accessible. Tesla has stated that it will launch this spring and has teased some of the update’s key features.

First off, Model 3 and Model vehicles with AMD chips—cars made since 2022—will get a new user interface (UI) with the Tesla Spring upgrade.

Tesla highlights the primary visual adjustments:

  • Fully immersive full-screen controls for parked vehicles
  • In the media player, large playback controls and fast access to Recents, Favorites, and Up Next
  • Expandable Autopilot driving displays, with a route guidance-focused smaller map in the upper right corner

“Auto Shift Beta,” the second significant update, will be available for the updated Model S and Model X starting in 2021.

Regarding Auto Shift (Beta), Tesla:

In addition to moving out of Park (P), Auto Shift (Beta) can now automatically switch between Drive (D) and Reverse (R) depending on your surroundings. Pedals & Steering > Vehicle Settings > Auto Shift (Beta)

This is a result of Tesla removing the Model S, Model X, and most recently, Model 3’s drive gear stalk from the steering wheel.

The carmaker has always stated that the intention is for the car to eventually shift gears on its own, but drivers of those Tesla vehicles currently have to utilize the screen to do it.

Additionally, Tesla is updating and adding new native apps to its cars.

Tesla claims to be releasing a native Audible app in a press release on the next update.

Additionally receiving an upgrade is Tesla’s current native Spotify app. There are now options for variable playback speed and lines spanning devices and cars.

Additionally, Tesla announces that the improved Model 3 and the Model S/X 2021 and later will get a new function named “Hands-Free Trunk.” Your trunk will open by itself if you stand motionless behind it and use your phone key.

The feature can be enabled under “Vehicle settings > Locks > Hands-Free Trunk.”

Additionally, the manufacturer is enabling examination of Sentry Mode films through notifications:
Additionally, the company revealed that with the updated Model S/X (2021 and after), it will be possible to enhance regenerative braking on highways.

As stated by Tesla:

“Your car can now do more regenerative braking at high speeds, which means more energy can be recovered by the battery.”

Finally, Tesla claims that by allowing “rear passengers to see current trip details, time, and temperature at the top of the rear touchscreen” for vehicles that are equipped with it, it will eliminate the need for parents to respond to a few “are we there yet?” questions.

Although Tesla did not specify when this upgrade would be released, it is anticipated that the fleet would receive it gradually over the next few weeks.
