An even more significant makeover than the previous one appears to be in the works for Mercedes-Benz’s midsize SUV, the GLE-Class.

There is work on an upgraded version of the GLE-Class, as evidenced by the sighting of a prototype under some camouflage gear that sports a new front-end design during testing.

There are also hidden sections of the interior that hint at a larger infotainment screen and a revised steering wheel design.

The first revision to the current GLE-Class was made for the 2024 model year, after it debuted as a 2020. An arrival for the 2027 model year is very likely as this second version is anticipated to make its public debut around 2026.

Mercedes usually only updates its cars once in a product cycle, but this second update will help keep the GLE-Class newer for longer, since Mercedes is expected to extend the life of some of its current gas cars. Another car with a predicted longer product cycle is the latest S-Class.

The slower-than-anticipated demand for electric cars is the cause. Mercedes had said in February that it will continue to offer cars with gas engines after 2030, despite its original aim to transition entirely to electric vehicles by then.

Mercedes has already stated that the GLE 53 from AMG will get a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2026 model year, replacing the present mild-hybrid configuration. However, it is unclear what plans the carmaker has for the mechanical components. A 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharger and an electric motor will work together to produce 536 horsepower in the new powertrain.

Moreover, the V-8 might be phased away. The 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged engine replaces the V-8 in the redesigned 2025 G-Class, while the V-8 will remain in the AMG G 63 for the time being.

It’s conceivable that some new tech features may be implemented. The Offroad Cockpit, which was unveiled in the 2025 G-Class, ought to be one of these. It gives a summary of the most important data for off-road driving on the infotainment screen and gauge cluster. This contains data on tire pressure, temperature readings, steering angle, altitude, vehicle orientation, and a compass. Additionally, it has a transparent hood function that uses the surround-view camera system to show what’s underneath the engine compartment. This feature can be useful for both off-roading and maneuvering around tight curbs.
