Samsung formally unveiled the Galaxy S24 lineup, which includes the high-end S24 Ultra. Discover what makes the display cover of the next-generation Corning Gorilla Armor screen so unique from the creators.

For as long as most owners of Android and iPhone smartphones can remember, the most popular smartphones have been equipped with Gorilla Glass. For whatever Gorilla Glass has to offer, most Android OEMs still look to Corning, even if Apple has switched to a proprietary Ceramic Shield panel.

With the launch of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Corning formally unveiled Gorilla Armor, their newest panel. Leaving aside the “glass” terminology that we have all grown to know so well, Gorilla Armor provides a significant improvement in terms of both design and durability. The Galaxy S24 Ultra appears to have a typical glass display on the outside, but its manufacturer is making audacious claims about it.

25% of the panel’s material is recycled pre-consumer. The new glass, according to Corning, can reduce reflection by up to 75%, which can be advantageous for users in practically every situation other than when using a phone in total darkness.

The company also mentions that, contrary to what is frequently said about new glass development, lab testing suggests that the new Corning Gorilla Armor delivers far better scratch resistance. Corning claims that over time, it created tiny scratches on the paneling using a brand-new device it dubbed the “Scratch Bot.” The company’s own test findings state that following the tests, no obvious scratches were observed.

This claim cannot be verified until the Galaxy S24 Ultra is in the hands of users. It would be good if more people could leave the house without a screen protector if this were to be the case.

Enhancing the optics of its glass screens was one of Corning’s other main objectives. The QHD+ display of the Galaxy S24 Ulta is expected to be much more visible thanks to Gorilla Armor, which attempts to enhance the overall clarity of the AMOLED panels beneath it.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy S24 Ultra are already open, and the device will ship by the end of January.
